Hello Clarky,
I've listened to Shredz a fair few times now, just to ensure I could
comment fairly and objectively.
As you know, I don't (can't) play so I am unable to comment on the more
technical aspects of your efforts but I do know what sounds good to me.
Over the years I have bought many albums, some of which I put into the
category of 'Classics'.
These include Machine Head, Led Zep IV, Dark Side of the Moon, Band on
the Run, Brothers in Arms, SWTA, Slippery when Wet amongst others.
Hand on heart, I can honestly say that Shredz at an Exhibition is a
worthy addition to that list. Stunning, truly stunning.
Good luck.
Steve.

REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE!
Well I've had the CD for about a week now so I've had time to take it all in ....... I can't say that I've got a favourite track cos they're all great and each is different from the rest and I'm not going to review each track.
The album knocks Malmsteen's Concerto into a cocked hat for composition and feel and it's more consistent than anything that Satch or Vai have turned out in a decade. It's got the pomp and circumstance of Dream Theater but without the monotony.
I'm not sure whether you are a better composer or a guitarist but you are immensely talented as both. What's more you sound like an English composer, the 'crescendo' in Requiem hits me in the gut and fills me up like Elgar's Cello concerto, truly emotive. Your variation in tone and feel as a player is probably more eclectic than anyone else who springs to my mind and in places you shift from Malmsteen's tone to Uli Jon Roth seamlessly. I love Roth's tone and feel and I've never heard any one else come close.
Got to love the way that you go from the diminished / harmonic minor chops straight into the classic rock pentatonics to keep it all fresh and exciting and the way that the shredding is 'appropriate'. You know, I listened to the album 3 times before I realised how good the playing was I was so into the arrangement and composition. I love the feel of 'Artaud' and who knew would imagine that a 'shredder' could wield a Nylon strung guitar like that as well?
Seriously, I'm blown away. This album is up there with the greats, it is so listenable, cohesive and consistent.
I think that Vai said that so many people had made a bad job of playing with an orchestra, with the exception of Malmsteen and Roth (and himself of course) because they sounded like a guitarist playing with an orchestra and not being 'in it' ( not his exact words ). Well add another name to the list cos Clarky's in town!
I hope this thing takes off for you man, you totally deserve it and it's all just down to luck and exposure now, no question about the product. Fingers crossed but dude, you'd better start working on that 'difficult second album' cos this is some goddamn debut.
More power to you dude.

Hehe Clarky,
I am not technically minded so I couldn't write anything that would explain that side of things but what I can say as an avid guitar music listener is that this is not just a trip through the artwork, it is a trip through emotions too. Its explosively brilliant and something that Yngwie, Steve or Joe would view as serious competition in the guitar playing world, not just a touch of brilliance but a full blown hug of it! The album is seriously worth twice the money and worthy of being in the hall of fame for legends of shred! Can't wait for the next album.

Well, mine finally arrived today and I've already PM'ed Paul to let him know how much I like it, but I just have to say that it really is an awesome, epic piece of work. You done well boy. REALLY well. I really hope to hear it live one day.
Everything about it is really, really incredible. And I will go out on a limb now and say that Raft of the Medusa is my favourite guitar instrumental track. Ever. Listened to the 1st four tracks on the way home...and I have to say mate, this is some or the, if not THE most incredible instrumental stuff I've ever heard. Raft of the Medusa had the hairs on my neck on end and I was almost in tears because I was so proud of what you have achieved. I consider it an honour to call you a friend. |

hey man, your cd arrived today. I think everyone's been impressed so far, but I personally think any feedback is valuable so thought I'd personally send you my thoughts. On the whole, you've written an absolutely astounding album, you're playing is amazing and flawless, and gives me something to someday be able to even come close to matching. its clear that you've spent years and years practicing, and its all paid off, you've got a style, ability and feel that I think anyone would be envious of. the way you can take an aim for a song and hit it is truly amazing, to me at least you've really encompassed everything you detail in your albums cover booklet.
seriously I think this is one of the best purchases I've ever made, you clearly love music, this comes across from you're playing alone, and it's a pleasure to have the opportunity to be a small part of that love by buying your album. I truly hope you keep doing what you do so well.
as for the album itself, I can't hear any weak points at all, you have yourself something to be proud of there! as I said in my post, my favourite points are the second movement in track 2, around 4:50 onwards and the track called Requiem. the playing and feeling that you have on those particular tracks is just SO immense, I only wish I could convey that much emotion with a guitar!! I really hope you continue to write and play for the guitar, I think the ppl who get the chance to hear you would miss out on so much if you didn't.
Wishing you all the best, I hope you continue with you astounding work my friend.

Got my copy before I left for work (which is something of a miracle as the post usually arrives at about 1pm! - -they must have made a special effort knowing that I was dying to hear it!).
I'm only on my first listen through (up to track 5), but it is truly amazing stuff! And I'm only listening to it on crappy headphones, can't wait to hear it at home on a half decent stereo. It is brilliant, I don't know how else to describe it! Clarky, well done, mate, you must be so excited, I'm excited for you! I'm loving it, so I suspect the rest of the day's listening will be taken up with Shredz - world domination awaits, Clarky
Not the most eloquent of reviews, but the CD gets 5 stars |

Wow what a CD - listened to it in the car on the way to Coventry (the place before Minky starts) ... a great combination of spine tingling melodies, heavy riffs and shred with some neat neoclassical touches. Loved the first track the rape of the Sabine women - sheer class, great melody, plenty of widdle at the end and high quality production ...
The chosen one could be Dream Theater and the 15:47 of the beheading of John the Baptist has everything - love the main heavy riff and the OTT shredding ....
I'll stick my neck out and say that personally I like this CD more than Guthrie's Erotic cakes and that says something ..
I'm a cynical bastard so it takes a lot to impress me ...... |

Damn. Damn and damn.
Listened to it straight through.
Raft of Medusa is my fave at the moment - probably change with repeated listens.
first impressions...
The most compositionally rich guitar record since Passion and Warfare.
It is already on my iPod. |
